Indefinite Article: A, An
Definite Article: The
- Article usage basically depends on the sound (Consonant sound & Vowel sound).
- Vowel এর উচ্চারণ ‘u/ew/eu’ (ইউ) এর মত হলে :এদের আগে “a” বসবে; অন্যথায় “an” বসবে।
Example:
- An umbrella/ An apple
- A uniform, A university
- Article কিছু কিছু শব্দের ক্ষেত্রে use করা হয় না-
Meals– Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Planets– Earth/Mars
Towns– Japan/Dhaka Except for UK/USA
Sports– Cricket/Football/Basketball
Subjects– Physics/Math
Abstract Noun– Beauly/health/honesty
Usage of A/An
- একক বা unit বুঝাতে a/an use হয়।
Example: An ounce is enough.
- Degree বা title এর ক্ষেত্রে noun এর আগে a/an বসে।
Example: My brother is a graduate.
- Rate/ value/ measurement etc. (দাম/ওজন/মাপ)-সূচক word-গুলোর আগে a/an বসে।
Example: Fish sells at two hundred taka a kilo.
- Each/per অর্থে hour/day/month – word-গুলোর আগে “a” বসে।
Example: He earns one thousand taka a month (per/each).
- What দিয়ে সূচিত exclamatory sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে “what” এর পরে “a/an” বসে।
Example: What a nice dress it is!
- Few/ little/ lot of/ good deal/ good many etc. phrase এর আগে “a” বসে
Example: There are a few books on the table.
- Quite, many, such, but, merely, not, rather এর পরে “a” বা “an” বসে।
Example: Mr. Saif is rather an honest man.
- একাধিক adjective যখন একই ব্যক্তিকে বা বস্তুকে qualify করে তখন প্রথম adjective এর আগে “a/an” বসে।
Example: He has a nice and costly pen.
- একাধিক adjective যখন আলাদা আলাদা ব্যক্তিকে বা বস্তুকে qualify করে তখন প্রত্যেক adjective এর আগে “a/an” বসে
Example: He has a nice and blue pen.
Usage of The
- Uncountable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে specific করে বোঝানোর জন্য আগে the বসে।
Example: The water in the tank is clean
- Sentence এ অদ্বিতীয় প্রাকৃতিক বস্তুর নামের আগে the বসে।
Example: The earth moves around the sun.
- যে সকল দেশের নামের আগে বা পরে kingdom/republic/states/union থাকে তাদের আগে The বসে।
Example: The United States of America.
- Majority, minority, police, people, public ইত্যাদি collective noun এর আগে “The” বসে।
Example: The majority of our people are illiterate.
- “The” can also be used to indicate any specific important historical date/event.
Example: Babar won the Battle of Panipat
- “The” can also be used as a possessive adjective before common nouns
Example: He caught me by the hand (the=his).
- “The” can also be used before the ordinal numbers, e.g first, second, third.
Example: I got the first prize in the race.

- Schools, Colleges and Universities
Example- the University of Florida/ the college of Arts.
- Ordinal numbers before nouns
Example- the First World War/ the third chapter/ the Korean War.
- Historical documents
Example- the Magna Carta/the Constitution
- Ethnic group–
Example- the Chakmas/ the Marmas
Don’t use the-
- Schools, Colleges and Universities when the phrase begins with a proper noun
Example- Dhaka University (not The Dhaka University)
- Cardinal numbers after nouns
Example- World War One(not The World War One) / Chapter three (not The Chapter three)
- Sports, subjects, holidays
Ex- Baseball (not The baseball)
Mathematics (not The mathematics)
Christmas (not The Christmas)
